Contemporary rugs have a well-deserved reputation for versatility. They’re available in a multitude of fabrics, patterns, colours and sizes and are capable of holding their own at the centre of a room or being a subtle, complementary element. They vary in price from affordable to expensive and some modern rugs are even collector’s items. But when it comes to selecting the right area rug for their home or office many people don’t have any idea where to start or how to ensure they’ll ultimately wind up with the rug that will fulfil their needs and desires.
Mistakes to Avoid When Purchasing Contemporary Rugs
Knowing what to look out for when you’re out shopping for a new rug can help you avoid paying too much or winding up with a rug that isn’t really what you wanted or needed. 25
- Buying Too Small – Buying a rug that’s too small is probably the most common mistake people make. When buying a rug for under a table the rug should be wide enough to accommodate the chairs when they are fully pushed back. When choosing a rug for the hallways the edges of the rug should come within just a few inches of the baseboard. Measure the area you want the rug to cover and then talk to the salesperson about appropriate sizes before buying.
- Selecting the Wrong Pattern or Colours – The pattern and colouring of your contemporary rug should dovetail with the area where you intend to put it. The rug may look great in the showroom but will that chevron pattern really go with the sightlines in the hallway? Or look right next to that wainscoting? Always carry a photo with you of the place you intend to put your new rug and refer to it often when shopping.
- Ignoring the Existing Lighting – Putting a dark rug in a dark room is probably not a good idea. On the other hand selecting a light coloured rug for a bright room may work out great. Keep the lighting in mind when selecting your modern rug to give yourself the best chance of success.
- Buying Because it was on Sale – Area rugs bought simply because the price seems right don’t usually turn out to be the best purchases. If you spend a little more time shopping around you may be able to find the rug you want at a price you can afford. You may even decide the right course of action is to put the rug you want on layaway. Keep an open mind.
Before investing time and money in a contemporary rug for your Toronto home think about where it’s going to go and what purpose you want it to serve. Will it be a focal point? What size should it be? How will you use it and what kind of traffic will it see? The more questions you answer before you set out to purchase a rug, the better the chance you’ll come back with a rug you’ll be happy with.
