4 Things Not to Do to Traditional Rugs: Avoid These Mistakes at All Costs

Just as creating beautiful traditional rugs is a time-honored tradition in nearly every part of the world, it seems ruining them also has a long, in this case, sorry and parallel history. Because they’re typically so well made many folks tend to conclude that the traditional rug is something akin to indestructible. Few things could be further from the truth.

How to Ruin Your Traditional Rugs in Toronto (or Anywhere Else)

  • Place Houseplants on or Over the Rug – House plants need water. Some of them need lots of water. If a house plant is sitting directly on or over a traditional rug overspill from watering the plant regularly can and will find its way onto the rug where it will soak in and slowly break down the fibers. By the time you finally move the plant or plant stand and see the damage it will be too late.
  • Don’t Address a Stain Promptly – If someone spills wine on the rug and you do a cursory sopping up of the bulk of the liquid and then leave the rest, you’re asking for long term trouble. While it may seem awkward to interrupt your night of socializing by addressing the spilled wine properly, doing so could preserve the long-term value of your traditional rug.
  • Store the Rug Improperly – Sometimes well-meaning folks will roll up their traditional rugs in Toronto and store them in the basement for a few years while they explore other interior design motifs. When the time comes to lay down the traditional rug again they find that the dampness in the basement has caused large sections of the rug to rot away.
  • Wear Your Shoes – If you want to shorten the life of your traditional rugs in Toronto walk on them while wearing your shoes. Sidewalks are covered in all manner of dirt, debris and contaminants. When you come home and walk on your traditional carpet in your shoes you transfer the mess from the sidewalk into the fibers of your rug. Also, hard sharp heels have a way of breaking down the fabric over time. Take your shoes off. Save your rug.
